The first prototype of a space-saving solution for small living areas. Popup can lie dormant as either a table or a chair, but can in an instant become a writing surface, extra seating, a table extension... whatever you need it to be.
The structure of the seat. The seat pan is attached to the sides of the chair, and the back swivels on the steel tube. The wooden elements of this design are either plywood or poplar.
The counterweight, a soup can full of lead shot, slides to lift or close the seat back. It is the main source of kinetic energy in the completely gravity-powered design.
This concept began as a rough "kinetic sketch." As I created a design based on this interesting movement, I made more small models to discover how I could make my ideas work.
